    Hello,
I wondered if gum paste flowers will soften when placed on a buttercream iced cake? I am hoping to ice and decorate a cake in the morning for an evening party, will the flowers be ok?
    Thanks for the advice...

I do it often and haven't had any trouble. Just make sure the gum paste flowers are really dry. I make my flowers well in advance, days even weeks a head of time.

  3. Hi-- I always recommend applying the flowers to the cake as close to the event as possible to be on the safe side... but like MsGF, I've never personally had a gum paste flower to wilt and soften on buttercream (and I've done many cakes with gp flowers that have held up days after filming the video). If you go this route, I would feel more comfortable with you doing this on crusting buttercream, and with flowers that have had plenty of time to dry, as mentioned above.

The times that I have experienced wilting of gp have been when I inserted gum paste pieces directly into the frosting--for instance, long gum paste spirals don't hold up well when pushed into cake due to the softening.

If you have some time to experiment, you could place a thin piece of gum paste or a gp petal onto a frosted plate and see what happens! This may give you some peace of mind.

Thanks very much Melissa and MsGF...I might leave the decorations to the evening of the party.
