Easy Stork Cake

This cute and easy stork cake is perfect for baby showers! Learn how to make a simple fondant stork cake design in our free cake tutorial!
Course: Dessert
Servings: 15

Ingredients

  • Cake of choice. This design works for sheet cakes also. We decorated a tall, 6 inch (double barrel) cake- 4 layers with cake cardboard halfway up and 4 bubble tea straw supports beneath.
  • Pink Petal Dust (applied dry for rosy cheeks)
  • Fondant or Gum Paste. If using fondant for the stork, you can knead in a little bit of tylose powder so that it will dry more quickly and firmer. Especially if you want the wing to have movement.
  • Confetti Sprinkles- Optional for polka dots on bundle. You can also cut out tiny circles of fondant with a piping tip.
  • Extruder- Optional but helpful for the lettering. I use a Makins Ultimate Clay Extruder.
  • Templates for Stork and Clouds
  • Piping tip 10 or 12 (medium round) for buttercream clouds
  • Food coloring pen for accents
  • coloring gels for tinting buttercream and fondant accents: Americolor Sky Blue, Electric Green, Orange

Instructions

  • Cut out gum paste (or fondant + tylose) cloud toppers first so that it has time to dry- at least a day or two. It may take longer in humid areas. Roll gum paste or fondant (with tylose kneaded into it) to ⅛ inch thickness before cutting out shapes. Dry on parchment or surface dusted with powdered sugar.
  • Roll out fondant (we like to add a bit of tylose powder as an optional step) to about ⅛ thickness on prepared countertop. We use a light coating of vegetable shortening to prepare counter.
  • Next, place stork template on top and cut out shapes. Allow to set up for several minutes before decorating.
  • Apply stork to chilled, frosted cake. Chill the buttercream frosted cake to firm up the buttercream (15 minutes in freezer) before attaching the stork the front with buttercream. Add the fondant baby bundle also.
  • Pipe buttercream clouds and border with medium sized round tip
  • Attach lollipop sticks to the back of the clouds, insert into top of cake.
