I like this Alien Cake tutorial for two reasons---number one, cute aliens!! Number two, you'll get to learn the "exploding cake" technique!
The exploding cake technique is such a fun one for occasions of all sorts. I've seen it used for birthdays with confetti, stars, and gum paste spirals shooting out, or with gum paste figures bursting out of the cake, and so on. The options are endless!
The funny aliens on our cake are meant to be used as inspiration. Feel free to copy them exactly, but also keep in mind that the sizes, shapes, colors, etc. can be altered in a hundred different ways. When it comes to aliens, anything goes!
Planet Cake was the first bakery that I saw make these cakes years ago. They have some awesome exploding cake designs online if you are looking for more inspiration!
**Here is a Flying Saucer Template for you if you'd like to make the same style of gum paste topper! Of course you can adjust the size however you'd like, just keep in mind that you want to keep it lightweight so that it can easily be adhered to a lollipop stick or floral wire!
Enjoy the video!

Stacey--nice to hear from you! You have been through so much, I hope that this surgery is your last and that you are feeling better every day. Thanks for all of your nice comments and I think that a Breast Cancer awareness cake is a wonderful idea.
It was awesome! Something new and different for me! Definitely on my to do list! Thanks!!
I would like to make those stars to go on top of a cake. Where do you find the 20 gauge wire? I've not been able to find it at Michaels...
My son wants me to make this for birthday. Do you by chance have a materials list for this cake? Not sure if I missed it or not.
Thanks so much for the site. My kids get about as much enjoyment out of watching the videos as I do making cakes for them.
Thanks!
Hi Michael--I'm sorry, I always include lists now but my older videos do not always have a list. This is one of those cases. I'll work on adding one! (So glad that you are making this cake!!)
HI Melissa,
If I don't want to do fondant over the whole cake do you think I could just do the top process in fondant and sides of cake in buttercream? would it look pretty weird?
any suggestions ?
thanks , Wendy
I love the layer technique and I was wondering if I could use the same technique or something similar to make this superman cake (http://make-cupcakes.blogspot.com/2010/09/everyday-superheroes.html) .
Thanks,
Carla
Hi Carla--Thanks. I think that you could. -
I wonder if you could just place that wedge of royal blue fondant on the frosted (or ganached) cake, and then cover everything with a layer of black fondant. Then go back and carefully slice through the first layer of black to just past the midway point on top of the cake, peel it back as in the photo, and then sneak in the other colors, logo, white pieces, etc.
I'm sure that there are other ways-- and you may even be able to go ahead and include more colors beneath the layer of black from the beginning--but this just seems the easiest to me. Good luck!
Just used this technique for a 40th birthday cake and this video saved the day. The step-by-step directions were so helpful!
Thank you!
Thanks Kathy, I'm happy to hear it!
