Our absolute favorite southern comfort food is homemade cornbread in a cast iron skillet with lots of real butter! I’ve used this cornbread recipe from the Fannie Farmer cookbook for 35 years! It bakes up beautifully thick when you double the recipe and bake in a 10 inch cast iron skillet! Perfect for Cornbread Dressing at Thanksgiving too!!
I borrowed the photo, but this is exactly how it bakes up!

When I lived in Georgia that was my go to dessert and more times than not, I refused to “share” it with hubby (poor thing!)… I managed to get an awesome recipe from a real Southern Belle and have been making it ever since (still not sharing – lol)…

I have always loved the Pecan Pie my mom made from a recipe she had been given by a friend when we all lived in Memphis. I grew up in Memphis and up to today the southern food awakes in me favorite childhood memories. My mom made delicious breaded chicken in the oven with orange peel, a special touch she learned from a neighbor. The cowboy stew which is a staple in my home, was a recipe passed on from a mother of a friend to my mom. I love the stories of recipes and families. So excited to read the new cookbook, I love Melissa’s blog.

Pimento cheese has become the new staple in my fridge. My go to after work, my go to whenever I want cheese and spice. I love to mix and match cheeses and peppers. My first introduction to Pimento cheese was store bought yucky but then an elderly lady made some for me from scratch and I was hooked! I had a coworker sell it to make money, so I bought some of his, and my family went nuts over it. So now, we make it all the time. Talk about amazing grilled cheese sandwiches, yummy snacks on celery and crackers, or just take the finger and do the ‘swipe” thingy and have at it. When it is good, it is GOOD, ya’ll!

Oh my! Where to start… Born in the south then translated to the north I miss so much good ol’ home cooked meals my grandmother used to make. My favorite meal was our traditionsl New Years Day dinner – ham, collards, black eyed beans, cornbread and of course southern pecan pie!!!! She never shared her recipes either. :(

Nothing better than southern cooking. Just reading this brings me back to the days at grandmas house deep in the country so biscuits and gravy were a staple of breakfast and collars greens at supper. Thank you for a wonderful cookbook memory!!!!

I immigrated to the United States when I was 13. My aunt married an American military man, who was stationed at the Lages Air Force base in the Azores islands, Portugal. We were lucky to be sponsored by my aunt and uncle. Uncle James was originally from Alabama. It was through him that I learned and fell in love with southern American food. It grabbed me at first bite and I’ve never cooked or baked the same since. I love buttermilk fried chicken, but my first love are biscuits. The smell it emits in my home reminds me of my beloved late aunt aunt and uncle. I make them every once in a while for my husband’s family today and they can’t get enough of it.

If only bacon grease was a dish… I love cook with bacon grease. I use it to season everything, even my homemade buttermilk biscuits. So it’s only fitting my favorite southern dish is breakfast: fried eggs (fried in bacon grease), bacon (fried in bacon grease) and buttermilk biscuits (made with bacon grease).

My favorite meal, made by my grandmother, many times throughout my childhood: OH, how I wish I could have her here to prepare it again, and to visit with!
Fried chicken, mashed potatoes and white gravy, wilted lettuce, cucumbers and onions, sweet corn on the cob. Ice tea for beverage. Strawberries and shortcake, with whip cream, for dessert.
Every single thing was grown and/or raised on their farm, and prepared homemade by her. It was all so delicious…and leftovers were awesome, as well!

Kirkland (grandma and grandpa’s last) family beans and cornbread. And mashed potato salad. These we dishes my grandma made, they were from Arkansas. My sister and I made them last weekend to serve at my uncle’s Memorial we had at my house last weekend. It was so wonderful to celebrate his life with the comforting food made by his mom. Everyone was taken back to those wonderful times of the past spent at my grandparents. Food has such a way of bring back comforting, loving memories of family and days gone by. ?
