I am beginning to get some word of mouth orders and though I'm new at the whole cake decorating biz...even I would even call it that, I have made some nice creations and have a lot of rave reviews with lots of comments suggesting I charge for my cakes given the time, materials, and details of the ones they've seen.
So, the last two cake "orders" came from people I have never met. One was a friend of a friend...she wanted a Micky Mouse cake, fondant, 3 d..etc...enough to fee about 20 or more people with an extra order of cupcakes with a topper....I emailed her a price for the creation ($40.00, plus $20.00 for the cupcakes)...she balked..said she could not afford the cupcakes (she and her husband were embarking on a Disneyland trip for her 4 kids the following day, husband's a lawyer, they live in a beautiful home, etc...) and was alarmed that $40.00 was more than she anticipated...when she picked up the cake, she was thrilled and I know the kids loved it, but I lost money on the project and I think she figured I'd whip it out for free since the friend that suggested me did not pay for the cake I made her daughter as it was a gift. So, last night I get an order from a "friend" on Facebook. He wants a 3 D Pug cake that will feed about 20 people. I quoted him $50.00 for the plan that I had which included a carved, cake from scratch, covered in buttercream and fondant, hand painted with personalization for his daughter's 10th birthday. Once I sent him the price quote, I didn't hear back from him. This AM I get an email saying he had "no idea' it would be so expensive and since he just bought a car, he cannot afford the cake...so he cancelled. I have never met the guy...he's a facebook fan of my cakes, and in his explanation said "he didn't figure it would cost so much" .
Okay. cake ladies and gents. am I doing something wrong here? My materials and labor alone is not free...and simply going to Safeway and buying a sheet cake would set him back about $30 bucks with no special decoration...I'm happy he cancelled before I started the project, but I'm confused.
