Hi Everyone!
California does not currently have a Cottage Food Law, so it is illegal to bake and sell from your home kitchen. Instead, we have to rent a commercial kitchen in order to legally sell the things we make.
I'm not sure how many Californians are here on this site, but I just wanted to share some information I came across.
I stumbled across this link to a Southern CA Public Radio show segment about a breadmaker selling bread from his home and dealing with the Public Health Department;
http://www.scpr.org/programs/offramp/2011/07/16/19853/public-health-dept-v-breadmaker-mark-stambler/
But what really caught my attention was a comment in the "comments section" below the radio show blurb that stated, "...the Sustainable Economies Law Center up in the Bay Area will be meeting this week with State Senator Mark DeSaulnier to begin the process of drafting a Cottage Food Law for California."
So, then I went to the Sustainable Economics Law Center website. I didn't find any information about how the meeting with the senator went, but their website does state that they are launching the Cottage Food Law for California Campaign and a feature to "Sign a Petition" will be coming soon. I'm guessing the meeting went well?

In case you are interested, there is currently also another online petition for a Cottage Food Law for California at http://www.petitiononline.com/CAHBLP/petition.html
With several states just having passed Cottage Food Laws, hopefully CA can be next!
Happy Decorating!
